I can relate to Julia's story. I had my first "nervous breakdown" as a teenager. My parents took me to the best neurologist in town, who ran a battery of expensive tests. My actual "examination" took maybe ten minutes, at the end of which he handed me a prescription for Valium. In the refill space, he had drawn the "infinity" symbol - I had just been given a lifetime supply of Valium! This was also about twenty five years ago - I don't know if its even legal to do that anymore.

Anyway, I got myself off the Valium after a few years, with the help of acupuncture. I had to be motivated enough to deal with the withdrawal symptoms to some degree, but the acupuncture definitely helped to calm my nervous system, and make the transition easier.
