I don't know what the experts say, but I do know that my experience with eating disorders makes me believe that it is related to OCD. I know that I obsessed with food. I'd think all week about something stupid, like eating a Taco Bell soft taco on Sunday, or having my one piece of pizza on Friday night. The drugs that I took for depression, Paxil in that case, which can sometimes help with OCD, did put the weight on for me.
Now then, was the weight gain related to the drug itself? Was it related to the alleviation of the depression? Was it because I was no longer obsessing? Did I gain enough weight to get over the critical set point for anorexia, thus ending the obsession? I don't know. All I know is that I was fat and happy for many years until the depression came back. This time, I'm on Effexor XR, and losing weight. Now I'm starting to obsess about food and eating or not eating again. Since I'm now under the set point, I think that I'm in trouble partly because my body goes into anorexia with or without me at this weight.
The short answer, though, from a sufferer, is that I do believe that OCD and eating disorders are related.
