Panic Attacks: Hereditary or Environmental?

Posted by Deb on June 25, 1999, at 14:13:01

I'm new to the board, so please forgive me if I ask about a topic already covered. I tried to read most of the posts, but toooo much.... Does anyone else have panic attacks that seem to "run in the family?" I had my first pa four days after a major mva, so I just put it down to that. But I had had surgery for a brain tumor four years earlier and that didn't bring on any attacks, talk about trauma! My mother and all three siblings have pa's, all differing in symptoms and severity. I've asked my psychiatrist about this many times and just get a flat " I don't know". So, is it an internal or external problem? I'd like to stop just treating the symptoms and get at the cause of the problem. Take Prozac for depression and Xanax for the pa's. Sound familiar to anyone out there? Any info appreciated.
