Hi Abby,
Speaking only from personal experience:
agitated depression: I have all the signs of depression-sadness, fatigue, crying and usually suicidal ideation. On top of that no matter how tired I am, I cannot sit still- I tend to pace, and feel panicky.
dysphoric mania: mostly I feel irritable, but have racing thoughts and I am hypersexual; at times I'll burst into tears- I'm much more labile.
A true mixed state is where full symptoms of depression and mania coexist and rapidly fluctuate. It is true hell.
Dr. Hagop Akiskal has some papers on the spectrum of mixed states. He says if the underlying temperament is depressive than agitated depression arises, if manic usually a mixed state manifests as dysphoric mania. My manic states start out euphoric and tend to get dysphoric as I lapse into depression. Now wasn't that fun? Hope you're not going through either. Take care.
