MAOIs have "been around" since the 1950s. The first MAOI, iproniazid, I think, was used originally as a treatment for tuberculosis. In a clinical trial on elderly patients in a VA hospital, it was found quite by accident to be a mood-elevator as well, and became the firt viable antidepressant. It has since been retired and replaced by less hepatotoxic drugs of the same class.
I've only been on one for about six months. I fear the dreaded poop-out as well, but at this point things are going pretty well. No return to anything near as severe as what I once experienced, and, for the record, an MAOI has been the only kind of drug (and I took a bunch) that has really worked for me.
