Phenothiazines,were discovered by accident.
In the early 1950s a french surgeon, Henri laborit, used a drug in this chemical family, thorazine(chlorpromazine) to try to reduce blood pressure in patients before surgery. He found that their blood pressure didn't drop, but that they became much less anxious.French psychiatrists tried the drug w/ their patients, & found that it worked. It also reduced hallucinations & delusions among schizophrenic patients.Chemists quickly analyed chlorpromazine & developed many others drugs that are related to it but are even more effective in reducing psychotic symptoms(e.g.,clozapine,haloperidol)
