Michael - My Standard Dictionary of the English Language Vol.II M-Z (20th Century Subscription Version) printed in 1903 says:

tar-na'tion, a. & adv. [Dial. & Slang.] A semiprofane epithet similar to tarnal; as in tarnation slow. [Cor. of DAMNATION.]

tarnal, a. & adv. [Dial. & Slang.] Eternal or infernal: a vulgar corruption bordering on the profane.

Hope this clears things up. (Hmmm... I wonder what I could get for this dictionary on eBay?) - Cam W.
