Gail - I'm not really sure what you mean by a life line. Theoretically, Celexa should work indefinitely, but many people who are taking SSRI antidepressants experience what this site calls 'poop-out'. This is where the drug does not seem to work as well as it once did. This can happen at any time during therapy and doesn't happen to everyone. To avoid relapse, many doctors recommend taking the antidepressant for at least 6 months, but I find 9 months to a year is needed. Really, one does not know when to go off of an antidepressant, but the 9 months to a year guideline holds for many people. Some people do have to take an antidepressant for life, but not the vast majority. Hope this helps - Cam W.
