Amanda - Wellbutrin and Serzone are both antidepressants, and both are totally unrelated to any of the mood stabilizers. They are used for some depressive symptoms of bipolar disorder because they both have a low rate of manic switch (I have seen both cause manic switch, though; just not very often). Both will have little to no effect on mania or hypomania and, as I have said above, can make them worse.

I cannot comment on your therapist or pdoc as I do not know them. Also I do not know you or your full history and even if I did, I am trained in medication, not diagnosis. Therefore, it is very difficult for me to recommend a medication specifically for you.

As for a mood stablizer that will not cause hair loss, basically your only choices are Tegretol, Zyprexa and Clozaril. Tegretol is being used less and less in our area because of the number of drug and food interactions it is involved in.

Sorry that I cannot help you more than this, but I am not sure what your options are, as I can only say what we do at our clinic. Sincerely - Cam W.
