Oddly enough, the story goes something like this: Schopenhauer had a piece of shrapnel lodged in his temporal lobe. He refused to have it removed. From time to time, as he tilted his head to the side, he would hear snippets of song, it was his inspiration. There is also a story, well-written, of musical epilepsy secondary to an infarct in the temporal lobe, in Oliver Sack's Man who Mistook His Wife for a Hat. Think what you will of sacks, but it's an engrossing tale.
