James here...

I;ll tell you what I know, as I have taken several kinds of A. A
(amphetamine, for this discussion it does not matter if it is d or l,
methyl, Dexadrine or Adderall) is a CNS stimulant. basic body functions like BP and respiration's,
basal metabolism are increased. Makes more NT available, through a process I am
not sure of. Nor-e is clearly effected because behaviors and effects like
focus, wakefulness, drive and motivation are increased. In terns of
wakefulness and focus there are some intrusting studies. Looking at people
with narcolepsy and the sleep deprived a "stay awake" signal has been ID'ed.
Stims increase this signal. Parts of the brain assoc with focus and awake
which are deficient in ADD are activated and show more blood flow while on
A. The imagining studies show ADD'ers on A looking more like normals.

I suspect A is a big gun in that it effects many NT's and other systems.
Your body makes many things that are very close to A, phenyalanaine
adrenaline, steroids, and others. The suppression of hunger is a 5HT effect
and I think some other pathways.

You might think of A this way. AD's make more NT's
by keeping them active longer, acting on the receptor site by slowing the
rate it uptakes/reuptakes the NT. (The so called SSRI) A makes more NT's by working on
the other side, more NT's are released from the transmitter site. Using this
model it is EZ to understand why the combo of AD + A or some stims is so
effective in some and often leads to taking less of each med. They work
together on each side of the clef, one pushing more in and another slowing
down the rate NT's are taken up. If it is depression or ADD being treated I
think the combo of AD + stim is the best way to go. A. is short acting,
undetectable in 2 days and 6 hrs action in terms of its psycho effect. An AD is longer
acting and smoothes the peaks and valleys. AD's hold back the effects of a
stim so you don't go so fast and blunt any euphoria.

It will be intresting to see what Cam and others have to say that is more
technical. The above are my observations and conclusions based on research
and being on stims and AD's for years. Take it as such, as always YMMV.
