I have done better on effexor than on paxil. I couldn't tolerate enough paxil to make a difference. Well, actually, the paxil was working at lower level for me for a while, but then it pooped out. Once it pooped out, the dose was raised, but I started having side effects like muscle twitches (myoclonus). After trying some augmentation strategies with mediocre results, my doc suggested I try effexor. It, too, causes too much activation, esp. at higher dose, but it is less severe than the paxil. For me. I like the extended release version of effexor much better than the regular. The regular required more dosing times that seemed to need to be very regular, or I would start to feel yucky (if taking doses late). It also caused profuse sweating and headaches, as well as severe word retreival problems (have a milder version of that with the xr version) and sometimes, blacking out when I stood up or laughed hard. These are not problems with the xr version. Both cause insomnia for me, but this is counteracted for me by the serzone.
YMMV.
