I live in a city that must have much more than its share of the most known and respected psychiatrists and psychopharmacologists in the country. Medline lists over 600 journal articles co-authored by just the handful of names I know that live here (I've met two or three of them) But it doesn't seem to do me any good.
Possibly the most celebrated of a profession tend not to be the best. In any case most of these physicians are involved in research, etc., and have little time for regular patients if they treat any at all. (I envy those here who have said their regular pdoc is a researcher or other respected academician).
Perhaps the knowledge or experience of the doc isn't so important as his/her openness to new knowledge and willingness to try unusual therapies (properly researched and carefully managed) at the prompting of the patient. I think most of us here take such a proactive approach that there is no downside to this if we can count on our pdocs' support.
