Flashing headaches, tricyclics related?

Posted by Juan Herrera on July 8, 2000, at 20:19:54

Hi there,

I've been taking amitriptiline (sp?) for about one year. (It seems to
work better for me than SSRI's.) Since a few months back I've been
experiencing some weird sensation in the right half of my head . First
it was something like a tickling sensation, and after a month I
experienced very short flashes of pain for a few days. When I
described this to a friend who suffers from migraine, she told me this
kind of pain I was describing was qualitatively very much like her
headaches (differing just in duration and intensity).

That was a while back, then I got better. But it seems these
paresthesias are back now. Besides from this, I don't experience any
cognitive/physical disfunction.

Could this be a side effect of amitriptiline? May be very odd, cos
tricyclis are claimed to somewhat relieve migraine!

Maybe it's something involving the meninges? Anticolinergic effect on
cerebrospinal fluid? (I'm not qualified to make guesses at this, but
as my physician doesn't care, I might as well hypothesize :-)

Juan
