Shar-
You're welcome!To Cass and Cindy-
My father was a paranoid personality (I don't know if that's an accurate diagnostic term) and believe me I suffered ALOT of verbal terrorism at home. You are by far not alone in this. No one ever believed me either because he was functional and appeared otherwise sane, just abit crotchety. But as he got older it got worse. Until he actually became psychotic and one night believing my mother was someone else he chased her out of the house at midnight and she and my brother had to call police and emergency units to come and hospitalize him.
He's quite elderly, but the paranoia and delusional thinking had been there for many years. And , of course, no one ever would SAY anything about it. You know, it was seen as an attack on him if you did. I always thought everything was somehow a reflection on me and how inept or stupid I was. Not to mention being intimidated because I thought I was so substandard. Due to ADD, I never was one to think fast on my feet, but I didn't know that at the time. Not until recently have I been able to fully recognize all that. As far as my own mental health problems go, well, they can't understand or see the links, so I rarely ever discuss it with them.
I'm glad you find this treatise usefull. I did, and intend to print it out as a reminder that there are always TWO sides to a conversation and the other side comes to the conversation often with their own agenda, quite apart from anything you may say or do.
Sara T.
PS. BTW, since my husband is a university professor who teaches sociology (he actually does teach a course on Revolution), I am constantly around people who are self impressed and use these tactics, esp. the "if you were better informed" one.
