Jane, I experienced a MAJOR lack of appetite with my depression, so in my case, the Effexor alone helped restore my appetite to a more normal level, so perhaps it regulates appetite?
I can empathize with loss of appetite.
I am currently taking Ritalin for ADD, along with the Effexor. With those two, I have NO appetite at all and I have mixed emotions about that. On the one hand, I'm sure this will help me lose the weight I piled on taking other drugs (Zyprexa, Depakote, etc.) but it feels strange to never get hungry. I have to watch the clock or I might go through a whole day without eating at all...and that's a BAD thing for me...If you've never taken it before, be sure to take your Effexor doses everyday and on time. I had BAD mood swings when I was late taking a dose. Also, don't just stop taking it without tapering off. Suddenly stopping caused me some very distressing symptoms.
It was great as an anti-depressant. Worked in a short time and was effective early in my depression when I needed something fast. I've been on it for about a year and am supposed to start tapering off within a month or so.
Good luck with it...
