Maybe some of this news has already been posted, but new research (three PubMed links attached) provide some very provocative findings.
These studies are suggestive of:
--Why many Provigil triers who had previously or concurrently used other stimulants may have suffered bothersome and paradoxical reactions (eg., sleepiness)...and ways to avoid such reactions (NOT simply slow ramp-up or reduced dosage strategies);
--Evidence of neuro-protective qualities and Parkinsons treatment potential; and
--Serotonergic effects of Provigil identified, and amplified by concurrent antidepressant use. This could nelp explain why Provigil gives extra oomph to my Social Anxiety treatment at the same time that it increases alertness and cognition. Indeed, perhaps this effect helps offset reputed GABA-reduction properties of modafinil. It could certainly help explain and validate Provigil's reported augmentation benefits for antidepressant non-responders.
On the downside (and this is NOT included in the links below), Provigil was shown to be no better than placebo for ADD. This is bad news for ADD sufferers seeking new treatments, and it was a huge blow to distributor Cephalon (stock plummeted).
Otherwise this is all good news, and might warrant a look at Provigil -- or a more-informed SECOND look for previous rejectors. I'm sure glad I stuck with it.
(NOTE: Many or most of you already know this, but venlafaxine and paroxetine, mentioned in the abstracts, are Effexor and Paxil, respectively.)
