If you can get to Medscape, search "Psychiatric uses for new AEDs". It is part of a CME (continuing medical education article) containing a paragraph on oxcarbazepine. There are references at the end. It is new to the US, but has been used in other countries to treat mood disorders. Because of its structural similarity to carbamazepine it has potential for efficacy. The vast majority of the side effects from Tegretol are attributed to the one metabolite that Trileptal doesn't have. I have been taking it for a couple of months to augment Lamictal for very unstable mixed bipolar and am doing much better. The educated guess is that it could have a lot of potential for the population you are describing.
