I think (it's been a while and I tend to forget) the intent is to minimize side effects, especially when increasing dosage since the patient's system isn't used to the full amount all at once. I took mine that way for a few days, but I now take all of mine in the morning, because I sleep better that way.
You may want to call her and mention the discrepancy between her instructions and the package insert's. My guess is that she probably has a reason for splitting the dosage, but it never hurts to check.
