Effexor and insomnia

Posted by david donner on December 7, 2000, at 9:40:25

I just started on Effexor, 37.5 mg. My reason for trying it is anxiety caused by a specific situation which will likely continue for about one more year. I am not depressed. I spend a lot of time in unnecessary worry, in anticipatory anxiety, and have trouble sleeping because of this, taking sleeping pills almost every night. I use relaxation techniques, exercise, and rely on God's help, and while these things help a lot, the anxiety remains and wears me down after a while.

My choices, as I see them, are: ease the anxiety by leaving the situation (which I would strongly regret doing), continue under the anxiety without medication (which I probably can do but with considerable daily worry), or try Effexor.

Last night, with the Effexor, I felt like I was on speed. I took two different sleeping pills, and got about 4 hours sleep.

Will this insomnia pass?
What sleeping pill might give a good nights sleep, without bad addiction?
How long will it take before I can sleep without sleeping pills, or is it likely that I will need sleeping pills as long as I am on Effexor?
What level (mg) of Effexor am I likely to need?
Does Effexor sound like the right drug for me?

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

David
