DHEA can improve sex drive in some. Mid-life hormonal changes can cause depression (dysthymia), loss of energy and libido, and poorer memory. Studies have shown DHEA to be very often very effective in both men and women with these mid-life problems. It also, less frequently , can help younger people.
DHEA is safe if taken in doses that restore the bodies normal (youthful) level of DHEA but can cause nasty side effects and even be dangerous if taken in excess. Women especially need to be carefull not to take too much.
To get the right amount you need to have your DHEA levels checked. Normal blood levels for DHEA are 300 to 600 mg/dl (pg/dl, ng/dl??). Ignore the normal range values the laboratories use since they are too wide or age adjusted.
For men, if DHEA blood levels are below 100, a 200mg./day supplement of DHEA is required. If below 200, a 100mg/day supplement and when levels are between 200-300, take only 50mg/day.
For women, take 50mg/day if levels are below 100 and 25mg./day if below 200.
