Amitriptyline is the gold standard in headache prophylaxis, and it may be effective for other pains too. When it is taken for pain relief, one rarely needs to take as much as is necessary for depression. Thus, with lower doses you can avoid amitriptyline's noxious side-effects which can be anticholinergic, sexually frustrating, or sedating.
