In reply to amantadine for depression, posted by Pam on May 14, 2001, at 21:48:28
I don't have any evidence for amantadine's long-term efficacy and safety, but it appears theoretically and/or serendipitously effective and tolerable as an augmentation agent for depression in the literature {consisting of a short 8-week trial with fluoxetine and pre-clinical findings}:
TERAO, TAKESHI M.D., PH.D.. Female Sexual Dysfunction and Antidepressant Use. American Journal of Psychiatry. 158(2):326-327, Feb 2001:
"The fact that amantadine added to fluoxetine significantly improved energy levels and approached statistical significance for mood improvement strongly supports the possibility of at least subjectively insufficient recovery of the patients' depression at baseline..."------------------------------------------------
_Possible Use of Amantadine In Depression._
by Huber TJ, et al. Department of Clinical Psychiatry, Medical School of Hanover, Germany.
Pharmacopsychiatry 1999 Mar; 32(2):47-55:
"...All of these actions could constitute an antidepressant property, and it is suggested that amantadine might work as an antidepressant not through one, but through several mechanisms thought to be related to antidepressant activity.... Additionally, animal studies as well as clinical trials in humans have hinted at an antidepressant activity of amantadine."
