What an interesting line of inquiry!
I'm 52, single, no kids, homeowner, have dogs and cats. Although I had my first (and worst) depressive breakdown in my 20's (hospitalization, psychtherapy, no medication), I went on through years of chronic depression and what I can now identify as periods of hypomania, to establish myself as a successful landscape designer and contractor. But the stress of it all finally sent me crashing 9 years ago. I kept plugging away at my work (no cushion to fall back on) until I had to go on disability for a few years. I just can't seem to regain the ability, or motivation, to run my own business well anymore, despite 8 years of productive, creative work with 2 good pdocs. I am BP II.
So now, I'm working at a nursery (plant type) part-time and doing some consulting/design part-time. If I could afford it, I would just work at the nursery- I love it. Having the nerve to make this change, which could look like a step backward, is one of the best decisions I've ever made. Running my own business was stimulating and challenging to me for almost 20 years, and then it became a stressful, isolating burden. Now I'm trying something new and it is boosting my morale.
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, where we take good food and ridiculous prices for granted. I was born in Washington, D.C., where we took National Monuments and politics for granted, was a teen-ager in the Los Angeles area (teen-agers take everything for granted), and lived for a few years in Vermont, where winter was the big thing.
Longest answer yet, but I'm the oldest, and we middle-agers do tend to ramble on.
Good wishes to all,
Cece
