In reply to Ritalin augmentation for SSRI`s ? Please help !, posted by ben on July 29, 2001, at 13:37:01
> Hi
> I take 30 mg Paxil for several weeks and I feel better (after several AD trials) but I am always very tired with a foggy head. My doc added a little Ritalin (2.5 mg) in the morning for the excessive sleepiness. After one hour I felt a little dizzy and then gained energy. But this effect lastet only about 4 hours, then I got very tired...bader than before!!! I know of others that Ritalin can cause a "roller coster effect"...... up and down like the blood concentration of Methylphenidat (half life only 2 hours). Should I try to take more Ritalin or the slow release form (Ritalin SR) ? Perhaps I should try Provigil (Adrafinil isnt available in my country). What do you think ? Dexamin (D-Amphetamine) could trigger some heart problems (I have an abnormal EKG ) ! Any suggestions or experiences with stimulants ?Hi Ben,
Abnormal EKG?? Hmm. I wonder why your pdoc just didn't switch you to a more "activating" SSRI med like Prozac or Zoloft instead of adding a pstim??
Yes, the Ritalin administered in the morning (immediate release) would cause a "crash" later in the day. I was on Adderall (amphetamines)for a few months and got some bad headaches at times and BP went up significantly. I would consult with your cardiologist about what pstim would be least likely to cause problems (CV-wise)if your pdoc wants to keep you on the Paxil and wants to try pstims with it.Mitch
