In reply to Wellbutrin, Quit Smoking, Weight Gain, Prozac Help, posted by Jackie Black on August 1, 2001, at 10:18:44
I overeat compulsively when I'm feeling especially anxious, and Wellbutrin made me so anxious I was stuffing my face constantly. More than once I left my friends for a few minutes without much explanation just to walk to a convenience store for a candy bar! Fortunately for me this didn't continue long enough to cause significant weight gain.
So, anyway, do you think Wellbutrin might be making you anxious? If it is, anxiogenic start-up side-effects of Prozac might be making it even worse (though both times I was on the stuff I lost weight in the first month). Or maybe there's just some effect of Wellbutrin that makes certain people want to eat all the time? I don't know. I've never tried to quit smoking myself (I only smoke two packs a /week/ anyway), but I've heard stories of people switching from compulsive cancer-stick sucking to compulsive carbohydrate ingesting as they try to quit. One of them said something about needing something in her mouth to replace the cigarette.
Anyway, I might try going off the Wellbutrin completely and seeing how that goes. Just a question: why'd your pdoc take you off of Prozac in the first place? As far as I know fluoxetine and bupropion don't pull each others' hair.
Good luck,
-pm
