Wellbutrin + SSRI - really works?

Posted by Kathleen6674 on September 5, 2001, at 18:39:20

I saw my pdoc today re: the weight gain and sexual dysfunctioin I've been experiencing on Celexa. He's adding Wellbutrin at small doses (100mg to start, up to 200mg if 100 doesn't do anything)to try to counteract those effects. I'd been on 300 mgs of Wellbutrin SR by itself, but I started getting bad side effects at that dose; smaller doses were energizing but didn't help the depression as much as I needed. It did help me lose weight and I had no sexual side effects, though, so I guess the theory is that it will balance out the effects of the Celexa (I'm on 20mgs right now, have been taking it about 3 weeks), which is helping me a bit as an antidepressant albeit with the nasty side effects mentioned earlier.

I've heard things about docs trying the SSRI + Wellbutrin combo. I'm wondering if anyone's had it work as a way to relieve side effects and/or augment the antidepressant effects of an SSRI (I'm also interested in counterbalancing the slightly numbed-out amotivational feeling I have on Celexa).

My doc said that he's heard people say it worked to relieve sexual side effects, but most of them have partially rather than fully restored functioning, some patients have near full restoration, and others have no relief at all. He said the only way to tell for me is to try it (I think I'll change my nickname to "Guinea Pig" from now on).

Has anyone here had any luck with that combo?

I'm also thinking of trying gingko - I tried it when I was on Prozac, but I didn't take it at high enough doses, I think - I only took maybe 120 mgs a day, and I've since seen reports that twice that may be needed. I think I may wait to see if this Wellbutrin helps any, then start the gingko to see if it helps further or at all. (I don't want to start both at the same time, bc I want to be able to tell if it's one or the other or the combo of both that's helping or not, if that makes any sense).
