There is an amino acid supplement called dl-phenylalanine. It is a 50/50 mix of l-phenylalanine and d-phenylalanine. The d-phenylalanine is supposed to inhibit an enzyme that breaks down endorphins. Some have touted d-phenylalanine as having pain relieving and mood brightening properties. I don't know why d-phenylalanine is not offered in health food stores by itself. You can only buy it mixed with l-phenylalanine in the "dl" form. The l-phenylalanine might also have some mood enhancing properties also, as it is a precursor to norepinephrine. There is some debate as to whether or not "loading" with precursors actually increases levels of a neurotransmitter.
