wendi-
Sedation is a big problem with Paxil. I found that I slept better than ever before, rather blissfully in fact, but as time went on I needed more and more sleep. In the end I was sleeping around 12-14 hours/day, which wasn't exactly helping my recovery. Actually, I'm not sure that I ever experienced any antidepressant effect from Paxil aside from the improvement in sleep quality. I switched to Prozac, which was like having water thrown in my face (jittery, restless). Now I am taking Remeron (30 mg) which has more of a calming effect (like Paxil) but none of the creeping sleepiness. I found the lower dosages of Remeron (7.5-15 mg) very sedating and hunger-inducing (usually about an hour afterwards). At 30mg, however, the hunger pangs went away.
If you are missing the energy from Effexor, it may be that Prozac would be a good choice for you, since it seems to be more energizing than Paxil.
Best of luck to you--
