When taking meds like Xanax, the body tends to cut down on the production of the GABA neurotransmitter because benzodiazepine drugs magnify the effect of the GABA neurotransmitter.

As a result, when a benzodiazepine drug is removed from the body, the body is lacking in the calming effect from the GABA neurotransmitter because it takes a period of time for the body to increase production of the GABA neurotransmitter.

As a result, when lacking in GABA function, the body is left with a higher state of electrical activity; thus, creating a more favorable condition for a possible seizure.
