No psychiatric drug is a picnic to get off of if you take it long enough. My personal prediction is that sometime down the road, drugs like Effexor, Paxil, etc will be considered habit forming. This happens with most classes of drugs. They are first accepted and dependence is denied, and then later it is accepted when years of data are examined: e.g., opiates etc. Whether or not benzos are hard to get off of is not the issue... it's whether they help or not. There is not sufficient data on the withdrawl of the newer drugs like neurontin, so the medical community doesn't regard them as dangerous. 10 years ago, nobody would have told you that an SSRI was associated with a severe discontinuation syndrom for a certain percentage of people. Now it is beginning to creep into the knowledge base.
