Memantine Confusion: JohnL and/or AndrewB-

Posted by bornunderabadsign on January 13, 2002, at 22:47:47

Gentlemen,

As my adderall has long stopped working, my doctor and I have decided upon the remarkable remedy suggested on this board, viz., antagonism of NMDA receptors in hopes of resetting glutameric activity by methlyated amantadine. I have been on Memantine HCL for two days now: yesterday approx. 50mg, and today 10mg qid.

Though I am not sure from what, I've been experiencing the most profound 'spaciness' and cognitive impairment, though whetether from the Adderall or memantine I'm uncertain.

I seem to recall that confusion is often a transient side-effect of Memantine? If not this, than a residual hyper-glutameric state from the stimulants? If not that, then could an anti-cholinergic condition be manifesting, possibly exacerbated by 60mg once daily prozac. I know acetylchlorinergic-'ase' activity is invloved in glutamate signalling.

I must apologive for my incoherent matching of paragraphs, but how long, in your experiences, has memantine taken to become efficacious? Not much is known about the metabolism or removal of NMDA transmitter in the brain, could it be that the residual levels of glutamate transmitter, consequenced by the Adderall, pass by diffusion and require more time than actilvely catabolized neurotransmitter? (eg. COMT & MAOI) Also, should stimulants be taken during the memantine trial, or abstained from?

Thanks so much for the help!

-James
