Here is some background on Saw Palmetto from the Annals of Internal Medicine:

ADVERSE EFFECTS
"Adverse effects of saw palmetto are rare and usually mild. In all randomized clinical trials in the above-mentioned meta-analysis, withdrawal rates (a rough indicator of patient acceptance) were 9.1% for saw palmetto, 11.2% for finasteride, and 7.0% for placebo. No herb-drug interactions have been described.

DOSAGE
Dose-finding studies of saw palmetto are not available. The dose most often used in clinical trials is 320 mg of a liposterolic extract daily, equivalent to 20 g of crude berries. Treatment usually lasts 3 to 6 months, but no data from rigorous long-term studies are available."
