Some people crossed the river jumping to prozac or Buspar while dropping Effexor. (you can check out Angell's post just a couple of threads away:" I weaned off Effexor with Buspar...").
You could ask your pdoc if that is possible.

P.S.

In my personal experience i noticed that effexor withdrawal can be particularly nasty if you have suffered from some kind of consistent stress during the last months: it might show up when you're unconvered. I' d check that out.
