>dl-phenylalanine may be somewhat helpful if you have chronic pain because it inhibits the breakdown of the body's natural painkillers.
Otherwise, for depression or as a stimulant, l-phenylalanine will work better because it crosses the blood brain barrier much easier. After a week or two at 1500 mg/morning, I started to notice a stimulant effect. (I have had success with Twinlab, but not w/ Bluebonnet or Country Life brands).
The normal dosages for L-phenylalanine or L-Tyrosine is 500 to 1500 gm per day. I have read books that recommend ridiculous amounts of these amino acids but no one knows if high dose aminos can cause long term effects/damage.
The problem with L-Tyrosine is that it does not cross the blood brain barrier & so is dependent & competes with other amino acids/proteins for uptake into the brain through a carrier that is already saturated by a normal diet. There is a form called n-acetyl-L-tyrosine that seems to be much bioavailable than L-tyrosine & would probably work better. N-acetyl-L-Tyrosine is relatively harder to find, but you could definitely find it on the internet. I am trying to find a good book/source on amino acid psychopharmacology but I have had a very difficult time finding unbiased info about amino acids online, or in bookstores. Most of the sites providing the amino acid research information also sell amino acids!
