I agree with your assessment. I find that I need to switch between methylphenidate and dextroamphetamine to give my body a "break" from each while still being able to stay awake and focused during the day. Although I quit most caffeine 14 years ago, I still experience what you're talking about when I go on chocolate binges that sometimes last for months.
While my doctor doesn't want me to take the ritalin and dexedrine *together*, he has no problem with my switching between them on different days. This seems to keep me from building up a tolerance, especially to the dexedrine.
Check with your doctor about raising your dexedrine to compensate for your break from caffeine.
