Amoxapine As An Alternative to Dirty Tricyclics

Posted by What The Dillio on March 14, 2002, at 1:14:06

I have been on Amoxapine (Asendin, an atypical tricyclic) for 2 1/2 weeks. It is still too early to determine whether or not it has an antidepressant effect for me.

Overall, the side-effect profile is benign. There is no sedation, and there are no sexual side-effects. Weight gain is generally not an issue with Amoxapine. Anticholinergic effects (constipation, dry mouth, etc) are mild, definitely less than those that occur with SSRIs.

Unfortunately, I did experience a few ExtraPyramidal Side-effects. These occur with amoxapine because it has a mild tranquilizer component, although this component is much weaker than most neuroleptics. I had some Restless Legs, but only because I took excessive doses of it. With the start of the third week, this side-effect went away spontaneously.

No newer antidepressant has been proven more effective than a tricyclic in the treatment-resistant case, so if you're in this category, chances are good that a tricyclic may benefit you greatly. Consider amoxapine an more tolerable alternative to the other classical tricyclics.
