Probably what fachad mentioned. This is *very* weird, but I found that diphenhydramine has a very strong anti-panic effect to it. The panic I tend to get is a hyperactive autonomic thing (with lots of GI distress), then I react to all of the autonomic arousal and then get panicky. The anticholinergic effect of the diphenhydramine seems to "shut-down" my GI tract and it seems to take out that feedback *loop*. Also, anticholinergics reduce motor side effects (restlessness, dystonia, etc., from antipsychotics, SSRI's, etc.(extrapyramidal symptoms-EPS).
