In reply to Kramer: why do meds ''poop out''/stop working?, posted by Janelle on April 3, 2002, at 2:13:49
> Can't find a thread where this has already been asked (which surprises me!) so here it is - can you please explain why after a period of successful use, a med will suddenly "poop out"/stop working, no longer work to treat the condition it was effectively treating? Thanks!
Actually, I did address this issue a few days ago, but I have no idea how to find it, so I'll talk about it again. No one's really sure why this happens, and the specifics of it probably vary from drug to drug, but a way to begin to understand it is this:
The human body has a remarkable ability to regulate itself. For example, no matter how hot or cold it is, you are usually 98.6F inside. If you cut yourself, it heals and after awhile there's no mark. Sometimes this process may not be desirable. When you take a drug for a long time, the body may try to compensate for it to return to its original state, even though that's not a state you want to be in.
