I have been depressed since June and after trying a number of ADs (SSRIs & Tricyclics) which haven't worked (although for some reason they all worked on previous occasions when Ive been depressed) my psychiatrists next move is to put me on effexor. He intends starting me off for the first week at 37.5mg and then if necessary doubling it the following week. I am to continue on the 75mg for another 5 weeks! I am getting really tired of playing this waiting game and I'd like to push the dose up
once a week but his response was that he didn't want me to risk getting a seizure. However, my question is what difference does it make if I double the dose after a week or after 5 weeks sure my body would have had time to adjust to the medication after a week. I know my Psyciatrist thinks I am being too impatient and that these things take time, it's just that they never used to, they alway used to work within 4 days so if I don't feel I am responding at least a little after a week then I feel like either increasing the dose or ditching them.It gets really frustrating because my psychiatrist is being paid £150.00 for an hours session, which so far comes to over a £1000 and yet I feel as though I have made very little progress. I am just using him as a prescription filler but it seems like an awful lot of money just for him to advise me to increase the dose after 6 weeks. Which brings me onto another question and one I've already asked. Does anyone know of a good National Insurance Psychiatrist with a good reputation. I'm based in the Midlands, Coventry.
