It depends. For the most part, yes, benzos will get you some sleep. However, it's not so cut and dry, there are so many variables. Because benzos are addictive, they should be used responsibly. Abuse and self-medication is very common with benzos, especially among those who drink a lot or abuse other drugs (street or prescribed). Have you tried "all" the alternatives yet? Because you will have to go that route in many cases unless you have a good personal relationship with your doc (i.e. he/she TRUSTS you). There are alternative that may work for you, such as Trazadone, which is not addictive, and has only a few side effects (none too bad for MOST people).
Then there are meds like Ambien and Sonata, which are non-benzo hypnotics (sleep aids). There is debate about developing tolerance or "addiction" to these meds as well, but I can tell you that you will eventually get less favorable results.
Now, as far as benzos go, there are many different "flavors" varying mostly by the med's half-life (i.e. how long it stays in your system).
Personally, I have found Ativan, Diazepam (Valium) and Xanax to be effective, but, as you will see posted here "your mileage may vary". So....that's a start for you, what else do you want to know?PAX
