Buspar and antibiotics?

Posted by Flopka on April 26, 2002, at 23:52:06

I know that Buspar supposedly has some issues with erithromycin interaction (it raises the level of buspirone something like 5 to 13 times?). But is this also true of other antibiotics? My doctor prescribed me Sulfameth for a sinus infection and I started taking both prescriptions a couple weeks ago. You might recall I reported almost instant results with the Buspar, despite starting on a low dose (10 mg). (Along with near total insomnia...)

Well, I stopped taking the Sulfameth, and around the same time, the Buspar "stopped working." I didn't think anything of it at the time, I was kind of disappointed because the Buspar wasn't helping any longer, and wondering if it was just a big placebo effect or some kind of startup effect. But this evening I took Sulfameth again, and bingo. The calm feeling, the insomnia, exactly the way I felt when I first started on the Buspar. (I am on 15 mg of Buspar now)

My question is, if Sulfameth has a heightening effect on levels of Buspar, is this safe that I've been (possibly) at these wildly fluctuating doses? What should I do now - quit the Buspar and start the titrating regimen over again, or just "enjoy it"? (well I can't really, the calm feeling is a wonderful relief, but the sleeplessness probably isn't very healthy)
