switched to ritalin, first dose made me fall aslee

Posted by Holden on May 6, 2002, at 18:32:17

i've been diagnosed with adult adhd for a while now, and i've tried dexedrine and adderall in the past. today my pdoc switched me over to ritalin, as the dex just seemed to stop working for me, and even today after almost a year of these meds i am not sure about my proper dosage.

right before i switched over, i was taking ~30mg of dex (tablets, not spansules..i've tried both...), 20mg (some days just 10) in the AM, followed by 10mg around noon.

today i took 20mg of ritalin and promptly fell asleep. i'm still drowsy and feel wiped out.

i know amphetamines (and i guess amphetamine analogs like ritalin) have an opposite effect if you take too much, but that doesn't make sense to me, as my pdoc (and others) have said that a typical ritalin dose is equivalent to only half of what one would take on dex or adderall... so that if 30mg of dex was working, that logic says that 60mg (or maybe the 54mg concerta) would be equivalent.

so...the question i have is, is sleepiness a sign of too little or too much?

thanks in advance for all your advice....
