I'm assuming 'she' is your PCP or a family doctor. Basically what she is telling you is that she is not that comfortable with prescribing a benzo, like valium, xanax, atavan or klonopin, for your anxiety and would rather have you see a specialist in these drugs and let the pshychiatrist evaluate you to see if you need a benzo. That is not at all unusual and probably appropriate given your chronic anxiety. Amazingly, almost any doctor will prescribe an antidepressant because they aren't supposed to cause any type of medical dependancy, which is a fallacy. Also, celexa does help many people with their anxiety and depression. But beware that celexa is an ssri(selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) and can cause side affects like increased anxiety and insomnia for up to several weeks until it starts to work.

On the other hand it may relieve your anxiety almost immediately, within a day or two or perhaps a week.
My honest opinion is to follow your doctors advice, see how you respond to it, and if you have side affects you can't tolerate, stop taking it. If it works, keep taking it by all means.

But get that appointment with a pdoc and get evaluated properly by a specialist. A proper diagnosis is paramount to finding the right med. Hope all works out well for you.
