Antidepressants and mood swings

Posted by sedona on July 21, 2002, at 16:24:51

Hello
A little over a year ago I finally decided to try medication for an ongoing depression. I started taking Wellbutrin and found that it gave me energy and a social ease that I had not known for many years. This made me feel very hopeful since lethargy and social anxiety had made it very difficult to make it through a day of work. However, only after two weeks of use I began to notice mood swings. Irritable and angry for half the day, then perfectly fine. Sometimes I could go for a week or two with no problems then wake up one day feeling so dark and tired that I could not make it to work, and of course this would also pass after a few days. Prozac was added which did seem to help a little, but because of side-effects I no longer want to take it. I am now starting to wonder if I may have a soft bipolar disorder that was unrecognized. I have found information that points out that a worsening mood or partial response to antidepressants may indicate bipolar, but how can I know? Has anyone had a similar experience and should I consider a mood stabilizer? Thank you
