Phenobarbital is one of the worst barbituates; it is both very addictive and not enjoyable. I tried it once and slept for about 18 hours. Benzodiazapines basically facilitate the action of GABAa receptors. Barbituates lock open the channel that allows Cl- ions to enter a neuron. GABAa receptors are inhibitory, because they make the inside of a cell more negative than the outside. This makes it take longer for enough Ca2+ ions to enter the cell to cause an action potential. So these drugs decrease the likelihood that electrical impulses will be sent down the axons of neurons. Only very strong stimuli will affect the neuron enough to cause it to fire. I strongly suggest that you not take phenobarbital.
