My dad had an ulcer for some five years before they discovered there was an infectious component to ulcers. He was disabled in the sense that he was always in discomfort and could not go too far away from a bathroom. He got a nasty personality from it, too. When they published about H pylori being involved in ulcers he went and got treated. It took his gut a long long time to recover but he is normal now. His experience gives me hope: he thought he had a permanently damaged system that would never recover.
Of course brains are sensitive -- but they do have mechanisms for repair just like the rest of the body. Neurons can grow, can be repaired to some extent, slowly.
I don't know if you will recover, but you very well might. Brains can heal.
