In reply to Antidepressants and placebo...the truth, posted by ZyprexaNumbTongue on September 6, 2002, at 16:19:23
That's a good summary - the premises may
be true - there is no backing from articles
and such;my 2cents - I think that the
placebo effect is most apparent in cases of
anticipation. For example, let's say you
anticipate pain, or fear, and your friend
or someone whom you trust, tells you, "here
take this - it really make you feel much less.."
-- then the placebo may work, according to the
strength of the stimulus of course.Another example of the placebo effect is in
crowd hysteria - where everyone is convinced
or brainwashed into a frenzy of some sort and
told to take something that will make
them able to stay up all night or walk over coals
- anthropology books are full of these examples;Another example, where the placebo effect works: if
you are terribly distracted by a stronger desire;
in these cases the placebo makes you believe that
you can achieve what you want despite physical
obstacles, by drinking a certain Orange juice; when in
fact you may be riding on adrenaline; I think this is
most like the reasons of subjects prepped that you
give.Squiggles
