This sounds too close to lobotomy and other procedures used to "treat" mental patients in past years - such as insulin shock, a procedure that has been thoroughly discredited in our time.
Even ECT sounds suspicious and old-fashioned to me, a really last-ditch effort. Surgical intervention is always a last resort.
