I guess that's just a reflection of people in general -- some are good at what they do, some aren't. GPs, psychologists, and psychiatrists are no exception. I've seen the full range. As I've described here before, my current GP thinks any side effects of ADs must be my in my imagination, because these drugs "can't" cause side effects. I've seen therapists who have tried hard to probe my subconscious, trying to find some key childhood event that caused all my problems (I almost want to invent one, just to make them happy, but of course I won't). I've been treated by psychiatrists who insist on "one med fits all", despite all the evidence to the contrary. And so on.
Luckily, my current psychiatrist is more open-minded, actually listens to what I say, and was willing to work with me to find the right combo (which for me includes the sometimes-taboo benzos and amphetamines).
How frustrating that when you're having enough problems already, you have to fight to find someone who's willing to provide proper treatment. But, it's not that much different than finding a good auto mechanic, when you get right down to it. You just have to look around -- there are good ones out there.
